Evidence for non-Gaussianity in the CMB
In a recent Letter we have shown how COBE-DMRmaps may be used to disprove Gaussianity at a high confidence level. In this report we digress on a few issues closely related to this Letter. We present the general formalism for surveying non-Gaussianity employed. We present a few more tests for systematics. We wonder about the theoretical implications of our result.
متن کاملTesting Primordial Non-Gaussianity in CMB Anisotropies
Recent second-order perturbation computations have provided an accurate prediction for the primordial gravitational potential, Φ(x), in scenarios in which cosmological perturbations are generated either during or after inflation. This enables us to make realistic predictions for a nonGaussian part of Φ(x), which is generically written in momentum space as a double convolution of its Gaussian pa...
متن کاملCMB lensing extraction and primordial non-Gaussianity
The next generation of CMB experiments should get a better handle on cosmological parameters by mapping the weak lensing deflection field, which is separable from primary anisotropies thanks to the non-Gaussianity induced by lensing. However, the generation of perturbations in the Early Universe also produces a level of non-Gaussianity which is known to be small, but can contribute to the aniso...
متن کاملProbing CMB Non-Gaussianity Using Local Curvature
It is possible to classify pixels of a smoothed cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuation map according to their local curvature in “hill”, “lake” and “saddle” regions. In the Gaussian case, fractional areas occupied by pixels of each kind can be computed analytically for families of excursion sets as functions of threshold and moments of the fluctuation power spectrum. We show how the shap...
متن کاملEarly Universe Sources for Cmb Non-gaussianity
The common belief that the CMB is Gaussian distributed can be directly traced back to the generic assumption that the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton field are placed in the vacuum state 1. Relaxing this assumption might lead to detectable signatures in various astrophysical tests, most interestingly in future CMB and large-scale structure observations. In this note, we study CMB non-Gauss...
